ALPHA BETA AND BETA CHAPTERS AWARDED STIPEND FROM LAMBDA STATE FOUNDATION
Alpha Beta Chapter and Beta Chapter of Illinois (Lambda State), of DKG Society International, recently were awarded $1,000. The stipend, whose application was submitted by Alpha Beta member Louann Harms (Fairbury) and Beta member Suzy Perkins (Bloomington), will fund Backpacks and Books for Mom and Me Camp. This project will provide backpacks full of school supplies and books for 50 children who will be participants in the Mom and Me Camp (summer 2019). This camp is for children whose moms are in prison, and it allows them time to visit their moms and also have a camp experience. These backpacks will enhance and support these children and caregivers in having a positive start to their school year even though their moms are in prison. Also, in May 2018, Louann Harms, Alpha Beta, was awarded $750 by the Foundation. The stipend funded the books for the project Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My, that is designed to help second grade students at Prairie Central Elementary School, Fairbury, learn about nonfiction and research by working in collaborative teams to research different ecosystems. Maps and zoo designs show information such as where and what animals would be found in the habitat. As a culmination project of this research they design a zoo habitat based upon their research of plant and animal life in their chosen habitat. The Lambda State Foundation for Educational Studies awards stipends to chapters and individuals who are members of the Society. Its mission is to support projects related to the improvement of education in Illinois. Applications can be found on the state website (www.deltakappagamma.org/IL/). Deadlines for applications are May 1 and November 1 of each year. DKG Society International is an honor society that promotes the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. The Society has chapters in 17 countries and serves over 70,000 members by providing stipends for educational projects, scholarships, leadership training, mentoring, and global networking opportunities.
