
SARA KAUFMAN HONORED AT IEA REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY
Alpha Beta member Sarah Kaufman (center) received the Mary Lou and Keith Hauge Retired Award as IEA Member of the Year for her leadership and service. Also attending the IEA Assembly as retired delegates were Janet Kilgus and Lou Ann Jacobs. They bonded with the DKG Illinois State Organization members who were representing DKG in the exhibit area. They were sharing with attendees about DKG and have six pages of interested women who want more information about DKG!

ALBERTA KINATE HONORED AT NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE

Title IX is the federal civil rights law, part of the Education Amendment of 1972
prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any school or other educational program that receives funding from the federal government.
On February 2, 2023, as part of the 50-year celebration of the passage of Title IX, Alberta Kinate was honored at a ceremony at her alma mater North Central College in Naperville, IL.
An article from the ceremony says the following: “Bert (Klehm) Kinate ’67 was very involved during her time at North Central. She was on the women’s basketball team coached by Cleo Tanner, was a cheerleader, and earned Homecoming Queen while majoring in physical education.
After graduating , Kinate taught physical education at Willowbrook High School and coached the gynmnastics team. From 1968-70 she taught at Pontiac High School where she was the cheer and gymnastics club sponsor.
During the 1970-71 school year Kinate taught at Addison Trail High School. Returning to her alma mater Dwight High School in 1972, she was the sponsor for cheerleading and Girls’ Athletic Association. During her more than 30 years at Dwight, Kinate coached tennis, track and field, golf, and Co-Rec while being a class advisor. Kinate also served 30 years as a volley ball official.
In 2002 Kinate retired from full time teaching and coaching, but stayed on as a substitute teacher for more than ten years. She coached the Gibson City High School tennis team for four more years.”

Alpha Beta member Janet Kilgus was the 2019 recipient of the Skokie Organization of Retired Educators' Rose Dog Award for her advocacy on retirement, union, and education issues.
She was recently elected as a retired delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly and will attend the NEA-Retired 2019 Annual Meeting in Houston. She serves on the NEA-Retired Membership Committee and the NEA-Retired New Business Item Committee. She recently attended an NEA Board of Directors Meeting in Washington, DC and was part of a team that met with Representative Adam Kinziger, a former student of hers, and Representative Rodney Davis.

Congratulations to Alpha Beta member Dawn Conway! Dawn Conway Received the IAASE Larry D. Vuillemot Leadership Award from the Illinois Alliance of Special Education Administrators. The IAASE Larry D. Vuillemot Leadership Award is given to recognize an IAASE Governing Board member who has demonstrated leadership and significant contributions to the field via their involvement with the Governing Board.
